Course Description
The Nebraska Geriatric Education Center interdisciplinary online modules are driven by the need to train health care professionals to serve rural and minority elders. In 2006, those over the age of 65 represented 13% of Nebraska's population, compared to 12% nationally.1

It is projected that by 2020, 17% of Nebraskans will be over the age of 65 and by 2030 just over one in five persons in Nebraska will be over the age of 65.2

Caring for the elderly is especially challenging in rural areas because of:
1. Fewer health care providers
2. A shrinking rural economic base
3. Smaller size and number of health care institutions and services
4. Reduced access to education for rural providers and the difficulty of arranging coverage while attending programs
5. Greater health problems in the rural elderly compared to their urban peers. Minority elders share similar problems.3, 4, 5, 6

Many diseases in the elderly population are preventable or their sequelae can be reduced through health promotion and preventive care, timely care when illness does occur, and sensitivity to race, ethnicity and language needs of patients.
