Course Description
Poor communication and lack of teamwork between healthcare providers is a root cause of 70% of medical errors. Consequently, the Institute of Medicine has identified working in interdisciplinary teams as one of five integrated core competencies that all healthcare providers—regardless of their discipline—should possess. TeamSTEPPS (Team Strategies and Tools to Enhance Performance and Patient Safety) is an evidence-based team training program developed by the Department of Defense and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ). The premise of TeamSTEPPS is that healthcare providers must be just as competent applying the evidence for teamwork and communication skills as they are in applying evidence related to clinical skills. UNMC faculty members Katherine Jones, PT, PhD and Connie Miller, RN, PhD will provide an overview of the TeamSTEPPS curriculum and describe their strategy to introduce TeamSTEPPS skills in physical therapy and undergraduate nursing education. Dr. Jones will describe the National Implementation of TeamSTEPPS supported by AHRQ and summarize lessons learned from implementing and evaluating TeamSTEPPS training in 37 of Nebraska’s 65 Critical Access Hospitals. Academic medical centers are increasingly integrating TeamSTEPPS into their curricula as a means to achieve the IOM competency of working effectively in interdisciplinary teams.
